government’s forceful appointment of a headman from the Karbi community in Lakaroi, a village located in Meghalaya and governed by the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC). In light of this sensitive matter, JNC Western Zone President Hamehi Bamon led a delegation to meet with the chief executive member shri. Thombor Shiwat of the JHADC to seek clarification on the Assam government’s actions in the Jaiñtia Hills region. Lakaroi is under the jurisdiction of the Dorbar Pyllun Lapangap in the West Jaiñtia Hills District.
The JNC has also discovered that a significant number of residents in Lakaroi belong to the Karbi tribe, and their documentation, including voter IDs, is issued by the Dorbar Shnong Lapangap. Alarmingly, these individuals are reportedly transferring their documents to Assam without the JHADC’s consent.
“We urge you to take appropriate action by sending representatives from your office to the village and to promptly remove the headman, as this village is not part of Assam, and they have no authority to interfere with our land,” stated the JNC Western Zone President.
In response, the CEM assured the organization that immediate action would be taken against anyone violating JHADC regulations. The JNC President emphasized that if the JHADC fails to uphold its commitments, they will not remain passive.
